FAQ

When is the first Zoom? What if I can't make the live Zoom?

The first Zoom is Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 9am Pacific Time. It will be recorded and available for viewing within 48 hours for those who cannot attend live.

What I cannot draw or don't enjoy drawing?

The emphasis is on painting. Sketched will be provided for tracing if you prefer NOT to draw your own composition. Drawing is a great skill, but you are here to paint.

Do I have use the exact color you use in a painting?

No. I will make suggestions in the supply list, but I believe beginning painters should use what they have. Part of my teaching is color mixing -- learn to make colors from what you already have.

Can i really learn to paint online instead of in-person?

Yes! Many students prefer the bird's-eye-view they get in online classes. I can zoom in much closer on camera than would be possible in a classroom setting where you stand next to me to watch the demo.

If I have a limited budget, what is the most important for me to buy?

First -- Spend $$ on good paper. 100% cotton rag watercolor paper in 140 pound weight is best. Second -- get decent paints. Artist grade paints provide best pigment load, but decent student grade paint sets can be found for $25. Last - No need to spend $$$ on fancy brushes.

Margaret Blanchfield is a Sacramento artist and art teacher. An art teacher for 25 years, Margaret started out as a watercolor purist, and now also enjoys acrylics, collage, and mixed media art journaling. "My inspirations can come from a photo, nature, or a dream fragment. I love the unusual and unexpected, the magic of possibility, and the surprise that comes with creating. When I start a new project, I rarely know what the end result will be, I just make decisions as I go along. I'm attracted to bold, vibrant colors as you will see in many of my paintings. I love the spontaneity of paint flowing onto the paper or canvas and interacting with other colors. I often start with random splashes of color and then find the story in the paint."
